About
Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson (b. 1988) is an Icelandic contemporary artist based in Reykjavík. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Kyoto Art Center in Japan, International Print Center New York, the National Gallery of Iceland and i8 Gallery in Reykjavík.
He has presented solo exhibitions at Akureyri Art Museum, Ísafjörður Art Museum, Skaftfell – Center for Visual Art, PRÁM Studio in Prague and Trykkeriet in Bergen, as well as at exhibition venues in Germany and Italy. His works are represented in public and private collections, including those of the National Gallery of Iceland, Akureyri Art Museum and Ísafjörður Art Museum.
Working across painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and installation, Sigurður Atli examines the systems and conventions through which society organises space, behaviour and communication. His practice frequently draws on familiar structures and everyday objects, transforming their visual and functional characteristics into compositions that question established relationships between function, meaning and social order. Through repetition, abstraction and subtle shifts in context, his work explores how seemingly neutral arrangements reflect broader cultural and institutional assumptions.
Sigurður Atli graduated from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2011 and received a master's degree in fine art from Les Beaux-Arts de Marseille in 2013. He received a special mention from the Biennale de la Méditerranée for his participation in The Others Art Fair and was nominated for the Queen Sonja Print Award in 2018.
Beyond his artistic practice, he has contributed to contemporary art through exhibition-making, teaching and the establishment of independent cultural initiatives. He co-founded Print & Friends in 2015 and the Reykjavík Art Book Fair in 2021. He also co-founded Y, a multidisciplinary contemporary arts platform that operates an exhibition venue, commissions public art projects and undertakes international publishing projects focused on contemporary visual art.
